Character Information
Name: Cassandra Tyra
Canon: Mage: the Ascension Role-playing Game
Canon Point: After the zombie attack in her new world was defeated.
Age: 26

(canon) background: it's a mess, sorry this timeline is decent, but only goes to '94; Cass' timeline stretches at least 15 years later... Mostly it's "the world goes into the crapper", really.
(original) world & history: Cassandra was born in the Italian city of Ercolano. For the first ten years of her life, things were relatively normal, until she was diagnosed with cancer at ten. Her parents decided to move to the United States to facilitate treatment, and for a while, things were going well. Chemotherapy and surgery were working, and she was declared in remission for a few years.

Unfortunately, a car accident took the lives of both her parents when she was 13, and her cancer returned with a vengeance. Made a ward of the state, she had surgery to remove the cancer and save her life--and died on the operating table.

Normally, this would be the end of any story. Instead, when she was resuscitated, she also Awakened as a mage. After healing from her surgery, Cass was fostered by "Mr. God"(not his real name), an enigmatic mage of the Euthanatos Tradition, and educated in their ways.

As Cass was reaching the end of her tutelage, around the time she was turning eighteen, the avalanche came tumbling down. Things on Earth had been "bad" for a while--wars increasing, terrorism, et cetera (as the World of Darkness Earth is a good deal like the one we know, but darker), but the worst came as the Unnamed, the Awakened version of the Antichrist, began the final assault against reality. While they had been asked to help defend what was left of the Earth from his first attack, Cass and her cabal were ultimately tasked with an attempt to save shards of the World Tree, with the hopes that its continued existence would help return the world to normal and draw back the Oracles, powerful archmages, to help with that effort. The regrowth of the World Tree would also stabilize the spirit world that had been shattered by the Unnamed in his efforts to turn the world to his vision.

It was upon this task that Cassandra experienced her second death, as some of the Unnamed's lackeys came upon the seven mages--one of their eight had turned traitor on them. So that her companions could get away, and presumably take their cultivated branches with them, she sacrificed herself.

Waking up in another world surprised and frightened her, however. After Awakening, Cass didn't expect another "second chance". And yet, she was quickly befriended by a memorable handful of people, including the son of a fae aspected to Entropy, that Fae herself, and another Mage, the Akashic Brother Morgan Knight and the family he'd made in this strange realm. Though there was more than a bit of friction there at first, as Morgan's incarnation in Cass' world was the Stormborn, the servant of the Unnamed who had killed her. Her relationship with Salvador, the son of She Who Tends the Dead, started off rocky as well--he attacked her, and she had to defend herself until he calmed down and listened to why his mother was not ready to approach him yet--being of a race of fae who'd happily devour their offspring, were they not powerful enough to withstand their parents.

She had a brief fling with a werewolf named Tek Fire-Eyes, but his people disapproved of her. While Garou can be violent, Cass was too enamored with killing for their tastes. Despite the fact that she tends to do her very best to read the lines of a person's fate and be very certain that they deserve the fate she delivers unto them--nor does she go out to murder on a whim.

(CRAU) background: n/a

abilities: In Mage, the Ascension, magic is governed by Spheres. There are 9, most mages don't have all 9. Cass is an oddity, because she does have all of them, though some are only at the sensory stage. I am more than happy to discuss nerfing if the mod thinks it's necessary!

Correspondence 2: Sense Space, Touch Space

Entropy 3: Affect Predictable Patterns

Forces 1: Perceive Forces

Life 4: Alter Complex Patterns, Transform Self

Matter 2: Basic Transmutation

Mind 3: Mental Link; Dreamwalk

Prime 3: Channel Quintessence, Sublimate Quintessential Matter and Forces, Activate Quintessential Life, Enchant Life

Spirit 4: Rend and Repair Gauntlet; Bind Spirits

Time 3: Time Manipulation

There are far more specialized Rotes that can be performed, but this is a generic overview.

More importantly, there's a sort of system of checks and balances that Reality puts in place. Basically, when a mage exerts the force of magick to change the world in spectacular ways, he violates the accepted nature of reality, and a Paradox results. Often the result ranges from inconvenient side-effects to disaster.

Worse, since mages recognize the mutable vision of reality, it's possible for them to become lost in a world of their own creation. Sometimes it's difficult to separate truth from fancy or magic from the mundane. In severe cases, when a mage's senses are overcome, he withdraws from reality and becomes lost in his own magickal world. Although some may mistake this state for insanity, mages recognize it as the victim's mind being overcome with the grandeur of the Tapestry and the power of possibility. Such a state is called Quiet.

A mage in Quiet sees or hears things that aren't there, becomes obsessed or withdrawn or otherwise suffers a shift in personality. Quiets don't strike with any predictable regularity. Rather, they tend to result from extremely bad Paradox Backlashes or magickal trauma.

More mundanely, Cass is trained in firing guns, throwing knives, and swordfighting.

Personality: Cassandra Tyra is a paradox. On her original Earth, she had to learn to be hard, cold, and show no emotion, courtesy of the Unnamed driving her world to descent and Hell. She could only trust the cabal she ran with(the seven other mages of Four Blistered Winds, before Isis Cerea betrayed the cabal), and the shattered remnants of her Tradition, the Euthanatos. Oftentimes, due to misunderstanding, the Euthanatoi were seen as merciless killers to a man--in the aftermath of Descent, a persona Cass cultivated. This armor was quickly pierced in the nexus-world, and she had a few friends whom she considered close, as well as considering both the necromancer Mesteno, and Salvador Delahada, a son of the fae, as as brothers. With the onus of seeing her own death freed by it actually happening, she acquired a bit of a sense of humor, though it tends to be more than a bit dry and have a healthy helping of gallows humor included in it.

Inventory
Reinforced black leather biker jacket
Black denim jeans
Red silk tank top
Teardrop necklace on a silver chain--an actual tear from a fae aspected to Entropy (prized possession, it's from her adopted mother)
Band of throwing knives
a pistol and a clip of ammunition
Black leather boots
Single package of mixed white and colored chalk
pair of bone d6s
a katana
a tanto (crafted by Salvador).

The biker jacket effectively is lined with something like Kevlar. Everything else is mundane, save the fae tear, but considering it is so valuable in its sentimentality, she's not about to use it. It asks for a single wish from her mother, She Who Tends the Dead. (This can be rendered inert here, if need be, as well.)

Which of the following would they most like to have in abundance: limitless good luck, the freedom to act without restraint, the ability to teach and to learn, or for everyone to just relax? To act without restraint.

personality, revised!

[personal profile] against_descent 2020-07-10 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: The biggest thing that defines the personality of Cassandra Tyra is the code of law that all Euthanatos follow. This is called the Chodona, or the Eight-Spoked Wheel of the Law. The aim of this code is to protect all of creation, and she takes all of the rules set forth by it very seriously. She was indoctrinated into this view of living as a young teenager, and it has shaped the way that she views the world in a very major way. Because of this, she is not sensitive to death: she sees it as a natural end to all living things, and things that defy death do so in order to corrupt the proper cycle of life and death. Due to these rules, Cass has a sense of duty to protect this cycle and to make sure it does not fall askew in the grand scheme of the universe. Anyone or anything that threatens this balance is to be removed, whether that is with words or by force. She has no qualm with killing if that is the only way to protect this balance and to live among this code - some people are too evil to be redeemed. Despite her strong sense of duty, she still is kind-hearted, and the people that she kills in the name of her duty weigh on her. While she does not regret what she has done, she does often have a heavy heart for not being able to help them in a way that preserved their life. Killing is the absolute last resort, and she does her best never to do it out of or in a state of anger or hatred. Part of this grief comes with the cost of taking a life: who did it affect? Who is hurt because of it? Part of her code is to always be aware of the effects of her actions. She observes others around her, and thinks about what she has done and the reasons she has done it.

The grief she feels is not only for those she must excise, though. She has never quite gotten over the loss of her first cabal and the trust that grew between them. Though she chose to sacrifice herself, she feels that their absence as an ache that can never be filled. The betrayal of Isis Cerea cut Cass like a knife as well. While the entire cabal had been tempted by the Unnamed, Cass thought they all would remain united as a team. This was likely a remnant of childhood trust that had to die, but it died hard, and it's a major reason she dislikes letting people close. If those you trusted and thought you were the closest to could turn against you, then anyone can, for the right price. Cass does not even consider herself above this, but she doesn't know what her price would be. Though she might not even realize it herself, she does fear being hurt like that again in the future as well. Cass has a tendency to bottle her emotions rather than go through them and process them, so some of these truths she holds deep down in her core she may not even realize exist. There is a certain amount of introspection called for by what she is, but Cass is human and makes mistakes, for all her mysterious, hard-won knowledge.

Cassandra is someone who will do her best to talk people down from frothing and towering rages, but she herself doesn't get caught up in the debate. Talking may be nice and all, but she doesn't feel it does much in the end. She's someone who believes that action speaks louder than words, and so she will often act. This happens often if she sees some kind of injustice happening. If there's a derogatory statement she may shoot someone a very dirty look and move on, though she's likely to feel guilt for not doing more later. If she saw something more happening she would not be afraid to throw a punch to break things up that way - whatever means necessary to stop what was going on, without causing permanent damage to the assailant. If, however, the prejudice is against her, then she endeavors to let it rush past her without issue. She understands her own place in this world and what her duty does, and she realizes that it will rub the wrong way with some people. If someone were to try to pick a fight with her she would not kill them, but rather try to subdue them and be on her way. She tries to be a very fair individual, as much as a human can be. She does her best to judge people based upon the Chodona and takes their circumstance into account. If someone is Fae she would not judge them as she would a human, for example.

She is someone who does her best to be polite and helpful, but this can grow thin after prolonged periods of time. She was held apart from others and taught how to be a killer when she was young, and she now finds herself apart from others, akin to being behind glass. She isn't quite sure how to integrate with people, or how to relate to them, as their experiences are so far apart. She can come off as being a bit awkward at times, or perhaps a bit more direct than most polite conversation allows. She has worn armor for so long that she struggles to be vulnerable with others and truly transparent in her feelings--she isn't sure how to take the armor off and let people see the real Cass behind the facade she shows. On occasion she will try to be playful in an attempt to relate to people more, but it has a high chance of coming off as awkward or falling a bit flat   That being said, Cassandra does like people and she likes the idea of friends, but the subconscious fear of being hurt and the fact that she is slow to trust makes it very hard for her to open up.
