Locations & Employment
The city has many places to go and places to work! Below are detailed descriptions of what can be found within and without, both as means of entertainment and of gainful employment. Note: if you have a location you'd like to recommend, please submit it either in comments below, or on the Content Submission page.
If you'd like to work at any of the places below run by NPCs, comment below. If you'd like to get a job at a player-run business, please contact the player in question.
If you would like to run a business, comment below as well. Please include Business Proposal as the subject line. It will be listed below. If you'd like to run a page for your business on a journal, it will be linked below as well.
Make sure you also check the other setting pages for more places!
Note: Even if a business does not list positions available for employment, that doesn't mean there are none available. Just comment below if you'd like to list your character as working somewhere!
Location North of the City
More detailed information is coming, including maps! In the meantime, suffice to say it is a sprawling complex, much of it in need of repair, but with an intact magical library that houses many tomes of magical theory.
Illyana (
soulsword) has started teaching the fundamentals of magic to people eager to learn, and Harry Dresden (
harrythelizard) is working on warding the place against the mistakes of young mages to be.
Location Northwest of the city
The Arena, it seems, is one of the focal points of Ateratian culturenevermind that it just appeared, seemingly out of nothing. Gladiators in the arena, whether they are melee fighters, ranged, mages, or a combination thereof, seek their glory in combat on the arena floor. There are bouts there most days, whether they are newbie fights in order to simply provide entertainment for the attendees and experience for new fighters, or if they are scheduled, ticketed, and well-paid bouts between well-established and renowned fighters, there's always something going on in the Arena.
There is always a need for new combatants in the arena, whether they're seeking to hone their skills or seek their fortunes. The more skilled and entertaining they are, the more gold they earn for fights, and while the goal is never the death of the other, the weapons are real, and sometimes accidents happen...
Comment below if you'd like to be added to the roster of fighters at the Arena. They are typically at the beck and call of the Bookers (those who schedule fights) but if they're entertaining, it's a very lucrative industry...provided you don't die.
Location The Harbor District
While the Harbor district is home to several smithies, the premiere blacksmithy is a sprawling outdoor yard complete with a smelter, bellows, several anvils, and everything else needed to work iron and steel. The master smith is a no-nonsense dwarven lass by the name of Gili. She has a shopfront as well, selling her wares, but will also allow craftsmen to rent her workspace for a fee.
Location South of the City, north of the Forest
A stretch of sandy beach has been revealed (or just appeared, as locals don't seem too surprised) outside the city walls to the south! Not only is it an ideal place to snuggle under an umbrella with a wide-brimmed hat and a good book, or to cool off in the waves. This fifty-mile stretch of beach is host to a cluster of bungalows near its northern border, within sight of the harbor on a clear day, and huddled around them are small shops, little restaurants, food kiosks, and anything else you might expect to find on a boardwalk.
Looking for a place to host a picnic on the beach? There is a fantastic pavilion overlooking the water as well, complete with benches and tables and four outdoor grills for anyone who wants to man the coals.
Enjoy the beach and all its accommodations, everyone! Oh, and try to ignore the rumors milling around the various shops. Who ever heard of a shark that swims through sand, anyway? Venture too far south, and you might find out. The rumors do say the 15-foot sand sharks are native to the shoreline in and near the forest far to the south, after all. It should be safe if you don't get too close.
If you do, and you happen to visit during high tide, well, you may see fins in the water or the sand. They're ambush predators, but with the rock outcroppings that border the forest and its beaches, you should be able to evade them. They might be able to swim in the sand, but they can't bore through rock. Thank goodness, right?
Location Northwest of the City
Dominating much of the skyline beyond the northwestern wall stands a vast circus complex. Comprised of stables for Chocobos, storage facilities for chariots, and at its center, a great track with several football fields in size surrounded by towering bleachers, the complex is always alive with some sort of activity.
Flanking the track on all sides are food and drink stalls (offering all sorts of things one would normally expect to find at a race track). If you can dream it up, it's likely it exists at one of the stalls, be it corn dogs, fried Oreos, pints of beer, or flasks of wine!
Street vendors abound in the winding streets around the complex as well as buskers, acrobats, and the like. Citizens don't require a permit to perform in this area, so anyone is welcome to take up a corner!
Beyond the buskers and the tents, taverns, and other entertainment venues, the streets give way to a sprawling park with a duck pond and several fields on which can be played an array of outdoor games. There is even what appears to be a tennis court as well as a basketball part, which is set at odds with the time period of the surroundings.
With so many opportunities for employment or enjoyment, there's really no need to assume what's listed here are the only options. Invent something and go all out!
Location The Market District
Located in one of the fancier buildings near the Market District Tavern is Aterat's premiere fashion locale: A Cut Above. Tiana, a small but beautiful human woman with glittering emerald eyes and rich, mahogany hair, is a genius if a seamstress and adores nothing more than adorning all bodies with complimentary and highly fashionable attire. She does keep regular business hours, has several pre-sewn pieces (normally crafted by her apprentice), does custom pieces for all occasions, and they also do repairs!
Location The Market District
Located just south of the Market District proper, in an unassuming neighborhood, sits an open-air carpentry shop. Known as much for its fine woodcraft as for its gruff and entirely unfriendly owner, Garry's Carpentry is a destination whether you're looking for new furniture, cabinets or small structures such as sheds or decks!
Location The Noble District
Located on the southern end of the Noble District, the Grand Ballroom is a bastion of pomp and circumstance in the quarter. Once the site of a grand ball put on by Halcyn herself (and meticulously restored by her as well), it now plays host to a full staff of caterers, servers, hosts, and security personnel.
Its entryway and dining hall are perfect for banquets and it also hosts an expansive dance floor with a raised area for musicians. Overlooking the dance floor is a balcony with seating, and outside is more seating and a viewing area overlooking the city.
The establishment can be rented for a variety of uses, and even allows for the use of its floors for rehearsals or dancing lessons (if there's anyone around keen on hosting such a thing).
Location Near the Cemetery
Located just off the cemetery in a small, seemingly innocuous little building just northeast of the residential square, Grave Concoctions is run by an industrious little gnome named Fanci. She's rarely not open, and her magically enhanced potions, tinctures, minor talismans, and herbal poultices have just the thing to cure what ails you, whether that cure you seek is one for a hangover, a bit of gout, or a minor demonic or spiritual possession.
The Headquarters of the Aterat City Guard is located just off the main street through the Market District. The Headquarters is home to an armory offering rudimentary arms and armor (think chain mail vests, basic swords, shields) for use in patrolling the city, and occasionally for the clearing out of kobold infestations that have taken root in the Harbor District...at least if you're on the payroll or if Captain Khannar has deputized you for anything specific.
The city jail is also located here, but thankfully, those dingy cells in the basement are left empty...for now. Captain Khannar himself can be contacted there as well.
The Guard is always looking for a few good men and women to fills the ranks of its patrolmen, and that does come with the perk of having access to ready, if basic, weaponry and other essentials needed to do the job. If you'd like to apply, comment below, or, if you'd like to thread that out in character, you can always click the link above to speak with the Captain himself.
Location The Market District
Your friendly neighborhood Gullwings are here to fulfill any request. We specialize in paranormal, magical, and unusual situations. We offer protection and exploration as well as advice to those who need it. There is no job too small for us to take a look at. Let us help you!
Location Just north of the southern forest
Nestled in the bows of the Great Southern Forest's southwestern borders is a quaint hunting lodge. While none of the hunters are in charge of the place, there is mutual respect and the lodge serves as a resting place for the weary. While the hunting itself is run by no one, in particular, the lodge does play host to a tavern at which one can purchase rations for expeditions, trade stories of the hunt, and warnings. Do not venture into the black heart of the forest, they say, for few return and fewer still with their wits still about them.
Still, there's much to do around the lodge, as hunters are cunning and resourceful, but not necessarily the cleanest lot. There is also good coin to be found in hunting, whether its meat, furs, or other ingredients.
Location Just north of the city
Located north of the city proper, beyond the walls, the mage tower's lower floors are host to a massive library housing what appears to be titles on every topic imaginable. The floors are dedicated to different subjects, and each is reached by a central spiral staircase. On the top floor of the library, there is also a ring of raised copper in an intricate sigil that may require investigation.
While there appear to be no workers or residents of the tower, books that are left atop study tables seem to have mysteriously returned to their proper locations by the next morning.
Located just down the road from the Guard HQ, the tavern is something of a central facet of day-to-day activity in Aterat City. To reflect the bustle of a city always in motion, the Tavern (as it's commonly called by most citizens) is always open. The atmosphere inside is warm and welcoming, with lots of dark woods polished to a loving shine, the smell of hearth and home cooking abound. The barkeep varies on the time of day, but they're always happy to welcome newcomers.
There's always room to help out at the tavern, seeing how often it's open, and there are a variety of positions available, and the owner, a barrel-chested man with a boisterous laugh who can be found around during daytime hours will be happy to fill them.
Location The Market District
Currently set up in a newly renovated two story market building with attached stable, Minimoff Deliveries is the fastest delivery service in the Aterat. It serves two different sorts of clients. First is the messenger service, which is primarily focused on serving local merchant stalls, businesses, and residences. Letters can either be taken directly to the building for another party to pick up on their own or handed off with payment to any passing runner wearing company armbands, and then run to anywhere in the city. All forms of messages and small deliveries are run throughout the city by a fleet of well paid and dressed children and youths who clearly receive not only good wages, but company paid for uniforms and even bad weather gear.
While a healthy part of their business is now centered around small letter and package deliveries, the company has grown to something akin to letter service for the core of the city, at relatively low cost per letter. Packages cost more but can also include picking up pre-established grocery orders, finished purchases from specialty stores like the tailors or chandler or any other local business willing to allow the messenger children in, and can be used to send just about anything across town for a fee.
The second (and big-ticket) service offered is for supply, large package, out-of-town, and other non-message deliveries. Anything over two pounds or to be delivered beyond a certain distance can request 'high speed' delivery and will be handled directly by the business owner, Speedster Tommy Shepherd. Any deliveries over twenty pounds or a large enough size to require a cart or multiple trips will have extra fees, as will any leaving the city itself. All packages are guaranteed delivered within twenty minutes anywhere in the city, or within two hours to more distant locations like ranch and lodges. Slower service delivery of large packages is available as well for a reduced cost, and are delivered by the end of the next business day, usually from a chocobo pulled carriage or sled in the winter.
Recent expansion into a full building also means that Minimoff Delivery children have a place with shelter, heat, and food during all times of the year. Employees are given three days off a week, either in a row or broken up as requested, and are expected to spend two hours a day in learning with a series of tutors hired by the owner. There is always a charity basket and bin just inside the main doors accepting donations of food, clothing, and other supplies that are carried to the orphanage thrice weekly.

The simple but in need of maintenance sign above the ticket booth (which stands empty) labels it "Moving Pictures" in bright light bulbs, some of which have ceased to burn. There is a card-based directory within, organized by genre then title, with reference bin numbers that referred to the rows of shelves deeper in the warehouse-like room. There are a lot of classic films, and some no one has heard of. Many feature human characters, but there are also some elves, dwarves, and more alien races involved in some of these films, some may even look familiar to only a few residents.
It should be noted, while some of these films may bear a striking resemblance to films characters know from their own worlds or even the homeworlds of some characters, there are at the very least slight variations in the tale and on the characters involved. The theater itself has one projector and screen, and the projector booth over the seating has controls for the theater's lights. There's no operator here, either, but they do have power, so anyone industrious enough to load a film canister is welcome to view whatever film they find.

Moving Pictures Movie Theater
Location The Noble DistrictLocated near the grand ballroom is a building straight out of the golden era of Hollywood on Earth. The simple but in need of maintenance sign above the ticket booth (which stands empty) labels it "Moving Pictures" in bright light bulbs, some of which have ceased to burn. Inside, a dusty foyer can be found, and an old snack bar that could do with a good cleaning before it's used. There is a door toward the back labeled "Archive". There is a card-based directory within, organized by genre then title, with reference bin numbers that referred to the rows of shelves deeper in the warehouse-like room. There are a lot of classic films, and some no one has heard of. And should Ignis be listed as the owner of the Hunting Lodge, or how did you want to list that?
Please advise and thank you!

As for Leon, I'm going to have him earn his munny by being a gladiator since he did that in the Underdrome & Coliseum back home.
